Located 58 miles northwest of Uvalde, this state natural area includes bird watching and banding, hiking, caving and bat observation. There is on-site lodging and a wildlife conservation passport is required.

Lost Maples State Natural Area

This 2,174-acre park located 58 miles northeast of Uvalde contains a wide variety of landscapes including limestone canyons, plateau grasslands, maple forests and clear streams. Park accommodations include 20 picnic sites, 30 campsites with water and electricity, 8 designated primitive hiker accessible campsites and restrooms with showers.

Concan Area

Located 25 miles north of Uvalde

This canyon area along the Frio River offers lodging, restaurants, shopping and tubing. Additionally, from mid-March to mid-October, the world's second largest Mexican Free-tailed bat population resides at Frio Bat Cave.

Utopia Area

23 miles north of Sabinal on the Sabinal River banks

This town is home to historic buildings, cemeteries, Utopia Community Park where you can picnic & swim, restaurants and shopping. The Sabinal Canyon Museum offers a view into the pioneer lifestyle with displays of farm tools and household items along with Indian artifacts, geological exhibits and WWII memorabilia.

Sabinal Area

20 miles northeast of Uvalde

Sabinal has a charming downtown with historic buildings, city park, and shops. The area is also known for bow hunting, antiques, and handmade mesquite furniture.


Bird Watching

Uvalde is known for its bird watching opportunities. The Hill Country hosts large flocks of wild turkeys, almost countless resident and migrant species, and is the nesting place of rare golden-cheeked warblers. More open terrain is habitat of fleet-footed roadrunners.
